Questions about security of Apple Pay
Is Apple Pay secure?
An Apple Pay payment is just as secure as a payment made using a traditional bank card. For all transactions made with your iPhone, iPad or Mac, you have to verify your identity using Touch ID, Face ID or your passcode. Your Apple Watch is protected by a passcode that only you know. It is required each time you pay with Apple Pay.
Your bank card number and personal information are not shared with the seller.
When you make payments via apps or on websites in Safari, the only information that the seller will receive will be the name, email address and billing/delivery address that you enter at the time of the purchase. Apple Pay stores anonymous information about the transaction, such as the approximate amount of purchases. This information cannot be linked to your identity and does not include under any circumstances the item purchased. Apps using Apple Pay must present a privacy policy that details how they use data.
Can I make an Apple Pay payment without realising it?
No, it is not possible to make an Apple Pay payment without you approving it. You actually have to hold your iPhone less than 4 cm from the retailer's payment terminal to start Apple Pay and then rest your finger on Touch ID to approve it.
On iPhone with Face ID, to authorise a face-to-face payment (in store), you have to confirm your intention to pay by double-clicking the side button of your device. You then have to verify your identity using Face ID before holding your phone close to the retailer's payment terminal.
To authorise an In-App or internet payment, you have to confirm your intention to pay by double-clicking the side button of your phone. You then verify your identity using Face ID. If the Apple Pay transaction is not completed within 60 seconds following the double-click, you will have to confirm your intention to pay again by double-clicking a second time.
On Apple Watch, you have to double click the side button of your watch and hold the display of your watch less than 4 cm from the payment terminal.
What happens if my iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or Mac is lost or stolen?
With Apple Pay, you authorise each purchase using Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. This prevents other people from using Apple Pay on your devices. You can go to your iCloud page or use the "Find My iPhone" app to temporarily or permanently disable Apple Pay payments on this device. Your cards will be deactivated or removed from Apple Pay even if the device is offline and not connected to a Wi-Fi network or mobile data network. You can also contact Spuerkeess customer services on (+352) 4015-1, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., or Worldline Financial Services on (+352) 49 10 10 (24/7) to deactivate or remove your cards linked to Apple Pay.
